Sabean Karate Academy is dedicated to the education and training of karatekas from age four and up. Our club practices the Chito-Ryu style of karate, one of the oldest styles of karate in Canada. Chito-Ryu karate offers participants excellent physical conditioning and strong mental discipline, as well as a proven method of self-defense. This karate style can be practiced by all ages. No special athletic abilities or flexibility is required. Chito-Ryu traditional karate focuses on good manners, self-discipline, physical fitness and self-defense. In addition, our club follows the Karate for Life: Long Term Athletic Development (LTAD) program advocated by Karate Canada. The LTAD plan focuses on enjoying life-long participation in karate and other physical activity. Training, competing, and recovery programs are based on an athlete’s developmental age rather than chronological age and are designed to optimize development during critical periods of maturation and trainability.
From September to June, classes are offered on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights. Classes are split according to experience/belt color (Kyu) and age. See the Club Information tab for complete class times and club location.
There are several benefits in practicing karate to both children and adults alike. These benefits may be sub-divided into the following categories:
Physical Benefits: Given the modern day conveniences and general lack of physical activity and easy access to abundance of food, obesity is rampant in our society. Engaging in karate at Sabean’s Karate Academy will emphasize cardio-respiratory fitness, core muscle-strength, balance and flexibility during dojo training. Students will gain the knowledge and skill set to be able to continue this training at home outside of regular dojo training hours in order to maintain and improve their physical ability ultimately leading toward developing a healthy lifestyle. The physical benefits of karate extend to practitioner of all ages. Individuals that may be pre-disposed to chronic illness due to certain family histories of disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or certain cancers will derive significant health benefits by diligently practicing karate in a committed manner.
Mental Benefits: The martial arts and karate in particular has a deeply rooted history in tradition. Through the ages, most students of karate develop physical and mental discipline, courage to persevere in all aspects of life, and strive for excellence both within and outside the karate dojo. Children that study karate develop a sense of commitment, patience and self-control that inevitably have positive effects in their studies in school. Ultimately, both the child and adult student of karate develop the self-confidence to pursue their dreams and find solutions to obstacles in life.
Self-Defense: Diligently practicing karate, in the spirit of the martial arts, will teach the student to appropriately defend themselves against attacks of various kinds. The karate student will learn to defend him/herself using a combination of blocks, punches, strikes and kicks. Specific defenses are taught to a combination of attacks in sequence. Additionally, students will learn how to fight (spar) against an opponent in both a sequential and ultimately a free fashion, honing their self defense ability.
