Since training resumed in January, we have had a busy few months, including the restart of our Friday-night kumite classes. The competitive members in our dojo have had some very strong showings in several tournaments and team tryouts; their commitment to training throughout this unpredictable time has clearly paid off. At the Senior National Team Trials in February, all three of our senior athletes finished in the top five in their categories: Ethan Baker took fifth place, Diego Ruiz won third place and Sensei Mariah Blunt captured first place. Sensei Mariah will represent Canada at the Pan American Championships in Curacao at the end of May.
Many of our competitors participated in the recent South Calgary Wado Kai Spring Tournament and the Karate Alberta Provincial Team Selection Tournament. We had nine dojo members selected for the provincial team – they will compete at the Canadian National Championships in St. John’s, Newfoundland in early July:
- Omar Almishri
- Ethan Baker
- Hafid Benmahmud
- Muhimen Benmahmud
- Mariah Blunt
- Wan Hei Katelyn Lam
- Donya Movaffagh
- Diego Ruiz
- Graycen Wheadon
Congratulations to all our competitors! We wish them the best of luck in their preparations and offer our full support during our training sessions to help them meet their goals!
