Over the last few weeks we have been focusing on our sparring stances.   While the 50-50 weighting we have been working on is not new, I have put a much stronger emphasis on lowering your stances, ensuring that your back foot is at a 45 degree angle and, most importantly, staying engaged in that position for the entire match.   When done correctly,


Volunteers Needed April 25 and 26!

Alberta Chito Kai (the provincial Chito Ryu association) is holding a casino fundraiser in April and is in urgent need of volunteers.  The casino will be held at Cash Casino at 4040 Blackfoot Trail SE in Calgary on April 25 and 26.  Volunteers are needed for the following positions:  

  • Cashier (Friday, April 25: 10:45 am to 7 pm)
  • Chip runners (two)

February 2014

Important!  No classes on Thursday, February 13th and Friday, February 14th for the Family Day long weekend.

All three of our dojo members competing at the national championships – Mariah Blunt, Noah Thompson and Joseph Workman – represented us well, with Mariah capturing the bronze medal in her division for junior kumite.

A Note About Training Fees

Please remember that though fees are paid in three-month installments, there are 10 months in our training year.  So depending on when you first joined the club, your fee payments may not match with a September or January start.  As a result some members have gotten behind in payments by one or more months.  Please kindly review your cancelled


January 2014

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing holiday season.  We are now ready to jump back into training – classes resume on Tuesday, January 7, with the children’s class at 6 pm. 

2014 promises to be an exciting year – and it begins with the Canadian National Karate Championships in Richmond, BC, January 17 to 19.  Three of our dojo


December 2013

As another year draws to a close, it is a good time to look back on what we have accomplished.  The focus for our training has been on basics:  our stances, controlled movements, speed and power.  We have been working hard at ensuring that the Kihons become second nature to all and we have spent time focusing on the specific Katas and Bunkais needed

Since training began in September we have been reacquainting ourselves with the foundational concepts of Chito Ryo:  fifty-fifty weighting in our stances, concise, controlled movements, speed before power and using our tanden – core strength – for all techniques.  It’s clear that the concepts are making sense:  new members are learning to perform
