Fall 2023

The dojo has had a very busy fall season with full classes and multiple competition and training events for our competitors. Karate Alberta has held several development clinics aimed at supporting and developing our kumite and kata athletes. In addition, Karate Alberta (KA) held its first tournament on November 18 in Edmonton. This tournament is an important building block for our athletes vying for spot on the Karate Alberta Provincial team as membership on the team enables athletes to represent our dojo (and themselves!) at the Canadian National Championships to be held in Laval, Quebec in July 2024.

Congratulations to our dojo members for their excellent results at the KA tournament:

  • Omar Almishri: 1st in Advanced Open Kumite; 2nd in Junior Advanced Kumite (-68KG)
  • Mariah Blunt: 2nd in Advanced Open Kumite
  • Kurt Ho: 1st in Junior Advanced Kumite (-61KG)
  • Mavis Ho: 1st in Junior Advanced Kumite (-59 KG)

Congratulations also go out to Diego Ruiz; he recently competed at the K1 Series A Tournament in Matosinhos, Portugal. Well done for earning the chance to represent yourself and your dojo on the world stage!

Members recently had the opportunity to learn from World Karate Federation #1 Ranked Anzhelika Terliuga. The kumite workshop was open to all ages; our athletes and coaches in attendance were hugely impressed and have returned to the dojo with many new drills and techniques that will benefit all ages and levels in our dojo.

The Canada Open Karate Championships are scheduled for December 2 and 3 in Richmond, BC. Our dojo will be well represented by Kurt Ho and Mavis Ho in their respective kumite divisions and by Sensei Gary Burniston as Referee/Judge.

Our dojo recently completed our annual Purdy’s Chocolate Fundraiser. Thank you to all who contributed! Please pick up your order at the dojo after class on December 14. In all, the dojo sold $2,263 in chocolates resulting in $568 funds for future dojo events. A huge thank you to Rose Buckie and Sensei Mariah Blunt for organizing the fundraiser!

Reminders

  • Last day of classes before the winter holiday break: Tuesday, December 19
  • First day of classes in 2024: Tuesday, January 9
  • If you will be late or absent from class, please text your instructor to let them know
  • For participants in the adult class, bring all your kumite equipment to each class to ensure you are ready to fully participate in any drills or techniques being taught

One final note: remember, that while we are happy to celebrate the efforts and successes of our competitors as they represent themselves, our dojo, the province and the country in the karate community, each and every dojo member has contributed to their progress and development. When we come to class ready to learn, while challenging ourselves and our training partners, we support each other in our karate aspirations, whether that is the top of a podium, a referee designation or the next color of belt.

Enjoy your training!
