April 2014

This past month has seen us spend a lot of time working on strength and flexibility.  I have been emphasizing the idea that flexibility comes not only from supple muscles, but, more importantly, from strong muscles.   For example, we have done lots and lots of lunges, some with tedo weights and some without – but all are focused on training a movement to the breaking point.  That means that you continue to do the technique, until you can no longer do it properly.  It is hugely important to discontinue when you are no longer performing the technique effectively.  I am so impressed with how hard everyone is working and making their best efforts to improve – but remember, the last thing we want to do is train poor technique just to finish a set.

On a related note – if you are looking for ways to improve your flexibility – please be aware that the technique best suited to you is dependent on your age.  In the adult class we talked briefly about PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) stretching, a very focused and specific method for adults using passive and isometric stretching techniques.  The important thing to remember as you try to increase your flexibility is to listen to your body and don’t overdo it.  If you have any questions about adding more stretching to your fitness, please let me know.  The outcome will be improved flexibility and potentially fewer injuries.

“How you run the race - your planning, preparation, practice, and performance - counts for everything. Winning or losing is a by-product, and aftereffect, of that effort.”  John Wooden

Enjoy your training!

  • Remember – no classes on April 18 – Good Friday – enjoy the long weekend!
  • Good luck to our dojo members competing at the US Open in Las Vegas on Easter weekend – Mariah Blunt and Joseph Workman.
  • Soke Sensei is scheduled to visit Edmonton from May 5 to 9.  Please stay tuned for more information as the venue is not set yet.  As well, Soke Sensei will visit Canmore from August 7 to 10.  More details, including schedules and costs to follow.
  • The next grading will take place on June 14, with colored belts grading from 10am until 12 noon and black belts grading from 1 to 4 pm.  For more information about grading, please see me.
  • If you are interested in trying out for the Karate Alberta Provincial Team – contact me.  The next training camp begins on Friday, May 9.
  • Karate Alberta will hold its next tournament on May 31 in Red Deer – more details to follow in mid May.
  • As we continue to build our club, it is always wonderful to see new members join.  And while we want everyone to stay and continue to train, we know that won’t always be the case.  However – there is a far better chance that new members will stay if they have a connection to the club – a friend already trains or their child trains in the youth or children’s class.  We very much appreciate any new members that join – and we want to thank our current members who recommend us.  So as a bonus, if you recommend someone to the club and they join, you will receive $50 off your next three-month training fee.  Thanks for the vote of confidence!
