Best of luck to our dojo contingent (athletes, coach and parents!) going to the Canadian National Karate Championships in Quebec City next week! Sempai Mariah Blunt, Ethan Baker and Diego Ruiz-Silva have trained diligently and are ready to take on Canada’s best.  Please note that for those who want to see the action but aren’t going to Quebec City, Karate Canada is offering live streaming of the entire event – go to for options to select and purchase viewing packages.

Our focus over the past weeks and months has been kumite – helping our provincial athletes get ready for competition.  But they are not the only ones showing improvements.  I’ve seen significant and positive changes in everyone – you have all taken on the additional kumite training with strong efforts and good karate spirit – well done to everyone!

After nationals is done, there is one more significant competition to prepare for – the Junior International Cup and US Open in Las Vegas from April 14 to 16, 2017.  We will continue to work our kumite skills and drills – however we will begin a slight shift to more kata in our classes in the coming months.

Our help is needed at a couple of casino fundraisers scheduled in the next few months – we are seeking volunteers to assist with the Karate Alberta casino to be held May 7 and 8.  Please go to the Karate Alberta website for more information: The KA casino provides much needed funds for tournaments and training events for all karate athletes in the province.

As well, the Alberta branches of the ICKF (International Chito-Ryu Karate & Fitness) are running a casino fundraiser on September 22 and 23 in Calgary.  If you can help, please contact

“The key is to trust in your preparation. You have done all you can, so focus on that fact. You will remain the same person before, during and after…. so the result, however important, will not define you. The journey is what matters.” ~ Chrissie Wellington.”
